Setting a Custom EDID on SVSi Devices to Provide a Unique Name

Configuring EDID

The steps below can be used to modify how an SVSI encoder is presented to a source device.  This is useful if there are multiple encoders connecting to the same source device, such as a PC with multiple display outputs.  It allows the user to quickly see the name of the device in the status bar of their operating system.

The following steps assume that an SVSI device has never been connected to the PC.  If an SVSI device has previously been connected to the PC, please refer to the Notes at the end of this article on clearing caches prior to making the EDID changes.

  1. Connect to the SVSI device webpage.
  2. Navigate to Video/ Audio -> EDID.
  3. Click the '-> Decode' button to populate the modifiable fields in the right side of the page.
  4. Find 'Detailed Timing Descriptions' and ensure that  one of the 'Detailed Timing Description X' options is checked, and click the button '0xFC Product Name'.
  5. Add your custom name into the 'Monitor Name' field in 'Detailed Timing Description X'.
  6. Clear the EDID in the left text field.
  7. Click the '<- Encode' button.
  8. Click the 'Set EDID' button.
  9. Connect source device and check the custom EDID Monitor Name value is presented.

Resetting Windows

If an SVSI device has previously been connected to the PC, you may need to clear the display cache in Windows.

CAUTION:  This is an advanced configuration change and appropriate measures for backup/ recovery of the registry should be made prior to modification.

To clear the cache, you will need to run Regedit and navigate to:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers

Search for and remove the relevant entries in the following subfolders:

  • Configuration
  • Connectivity
  • ScaleFactors

The audio device name can be renamed in System -> Sound Settings -> Properties for the sound device -> Rename.  The audio device name can also be cleared from Regedit in the appropriate subfolders within:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\MMDevices\Audio\Render

Ownership permissions for the folder may be required to be set.  The audio device name will be picked up on reconnect of the SVSI device based on the EDID Detailed Timing Description X value, and carried across to all similar audio devices connected.  It is not unique to any individual device and could impact the name presented for other SVSI series devices.

It is recommended to reboot the PC after any changes are made in Regedit.
