What tools are available to troubleshoot my Ethernet network?

Answer:

PING

PING can be used to determine if an IP Address exists on a network.

  • In Windows, go to Start then Run and type CMD, hit ENTER. Now you are at a command prompt window.
  • Type PING <the IP you want to ping>, hit ENTER

TELNET

Telnet can be used to troubleshoot a Netlinx system. You can telnet to both touchpanels and Netlinx masters.

In Windows XP go to Start then Run and type TELNET <the IP you want to telnet to> Example: TELNET 192.168.1.1, hit ENTER.

If Telnet is unsuccessful you will see a black window for a second and then it will go away. If it is successful then you should see a line looking something like:

Welcome to NetLinx v3.41.414 Copyright AMX LLC 2008

-OR

Welcome to Modero v2.85.14 Copyright (C) AMX Corp. 2002-2008

Notice the first handy thing is the firmware version of the device. Type a ? and then hit ENTER

and see what other handy things you can do. Many of the things you can do in Netlinx Studio

there is a telnet equivalent. Typing MSG ON and hitting ENTER will also show you the same

information as Diagnostics in Netlinx Studio.

If you get an error saying telnet is not available or is not a internal or external command

Install Telnet on Windows:

  • Click Start.
  • Select Control Panel.
  • Choose Programs and Features.
  • Click Turn Windows features on or off.
  • Select the Telnet Client option.
  • Click OK. A dialog box appears to confirm installation.

The telnet command should now be available.

FTP

FTP can be used to place files on or take files off of a Netlinx master or even ftp://ftp.amx.com if you are talking to Technical Support.

You can FTP by opening up Internet Explorer and typing in the address bar: ftp://<IP Address you want to ftp to>

Example: ftp://192.168.1.1

You will be prompted for a username and password. The default for a Netlinx master is

  • username: administrator
  • password: password

If you are using IE7 you will want to then go to VIEW and select OPEN FTP SITE IN WINDOWS EXPLORER to actually place files on the master.

You won’t have a great need to ftp to Netlinx masters unless you are writing files to the master or reading files off of the master but it is a handy tool nonetheless.
