Overview:

The BSS BLU-BIB (Break-In Box) is an 8-channel analog audio input expander for Soundweb London systems, converting balanced analog audio signals into BLU link digital audio. It provides high-quality microphone and line-level input connections via Phoenix/Euroblock connectors.

This article explains how to correctly wire both microphone and line-level sources to the BLU-BIB to ensure optimal audio performance and avoid common connection issues.

Input Configuration Overview:

Each of the eight input channels on the BLU-BIB can be configured as either:

• Mic-level input (for microphones and other low-level signals), or
• Line-level input (for mixers, playback devices, or preamplified sources).

Configuration is done through through the front panel, where the input sensitivity and phantom power settings can be adjusted for each input as needed.

Connector Pinout: 

The BLU-BIB uses 3-pin balanced Euroblock connectors for each input. The pinout is as follows:

• 1 + (Hot) Non-inverted signal
• 2 – (Cold) Inverted signal
• 3 Shield / Ground Cable shield or ground

Wiring a Microphone Input:

For balanced microphones, use a 3-conductor cable (XLR to Euroblock).

Connect as follows:

XLR Pin to BLU-BIB Terminal

• Pin 2 Hot (+) +
• Pin 3 Cold (–) –
• Pin 1 Ground Shield

Procedure:

1. Connect each conductor firmly into the Euroblock connector.

2. Using the front panel controls, set the input gain for each channel.

3. Enable +48V Phantom Power if using a condenser microphone (disable for dynamic mics).

4. Verify input signal using the software's Input Meter or front panel indicators.

Wiring a Line-Level Source:

For balanced line-level devices (e.g., mixers, playback systems, or processors), use a balanced TRS or XLR output to Euroblock connection:

• Pin 2 | Tip | Hot (+)
• Pin 3 | Ring | Cold (–) 
• Pin 1 | Sleeve | Ground Shield

If connecting an unbalanced line-level source:

• Connect the source signal hot to (+)
• Connect ground to Shield
• Connect a jumper wire between ground and Cold (-)

Phantom Power Considerations:

Phantom power (+48V) is per channel and should only be enabled when required.

Supplying phantom power to unbalanced or line-level devices may cause damage — always verify before enabling.

If using a passive DI box, disable phantom power.

Use the front panel controls to enable phantom power per channel as required.

Best Practices:

• Use shielded, twisted-pair balanced cables for all connections.
• Keep input cables short and away from power lines to reduce noise.
• Label channels clearly for maintenance and troubleshooting.
• Check all connections for secure seating in the Euroblock terminal.
