Note: The receiving fixtures do not need to be running the firmware version that introduced Fixture-to-Fixture Firmware Update.
For example, a MAC Aura Raven XIP running firmware 1.1.0 can distribute the firmware update to MAC Aura Raven XIP fixtures running firmware 1.0.0.
Overview:
Most Martin fixtures can be updated using a USB drive, via DMX using Companion Desktop, or over a network connection using P3 or Companion Desktop.
However, there may be situations where none of these options are readily available, and the rig contains a mix of fixtures running different firmware versions.
To address this, many of our newer fixtures support Fixture-to-Fixture Firmware Update.
This feature allows a fixture running a newer firmware version to distribute and install that firmware on fixtures running an older version.
The firmware update can be transferred between fixtures using either:
- A DMX connection
- A network connection
There is no specific limit to the number of fixtures that can be updated simultaneously, provided the limitations of the chosen connection method are observed. For example, with DMX, up to 32 fixtures can be connected on a single DMX line, meaning one fixture can distribute the firmware update to up to 31 additional fixtures at the same time.
Step by step guide:
- Connect the fixtures using either DMX cables or network cables.
- Disconnect the lighting console or DMX node from the beginning of the chain. Ensure that only the fixtures remain connected and that no other device is transmitting data on the line.
- When performing the firmware update via a network connection, ensure that all fixtures to be updated are configured to the same DMX universe.
- On a fixture running the newer firmware version, navigate to:
SERVICE > FIXTURE TO FIXTURE FW > UPLOAD VIA DMX512 when using a DMX connection.
SERVICE > FIXTURE TO FIXTURE FW > UPLOAD VIA ART-NET when using a network connection.
- In the FIXTURE TO FIXTURE FW menu, use the arrow buttons to select START, then press ENTER.
- The fixture will begin broadcasting its firmware via the connected DMX or network cable.
- Any connected fixture of the same model running a different firmware version will automatically begin receiving the firmware. The receiving fixtures will display a progress bar during the transfer.
Note:
- Fixtures of a different model will automatically ignore the firmware data.
- Fixtures already running the same firmware version will also ignore the firmware data.
- It is therefore not necessary to separate or sort the fixtures according to their current firmware version before starting the update. - When the firmware transfer is complete, the receiving fixtures will automatically install the new firmware and reboot.
