Question:

What is the BLU-BiB?

Answer:

BSS BLU-BIB Input Expander – Overview & Features

The BSS BLU-BIB (Break-In Box) is a networked audio input expander designed for HiQnet™ and BLU link systems, providing a seamless way to add analog inputs into a digital audio environment.  With high-quality A/D conversion, flexible connectivity, and ease of integration, the BLU-BIB is a powerful solution for scalable installations in live sound, corporate, education, and hospitality venues.

Key Features:

  • 8 analog line-level inputs with premium-grade A/D conversion.
  • BLU link digital audio bus (256 channels @ 48 kHz or 128 channels @ 96 kHz).
  • Simple plug-and-play operation – no configuration required for standalone expansion.
  • Front-panel signal/clip LEDs for each channel.
  • Ethernet control via HiQnet Audio Architect when needed.
  • Half-rack 1U design – compact and easy to mount with optional rack tray.
  • Universal power supply (100–240V, 50/60 Hz).

How It Works

The BLU-BIB functions as a remote input stage.  Analog signals are connected directly to its Euroblock input connectors, then converted to digital and sent to the BLU link bus.  This makes it possible to centralize DSP resources in a main processor (such as the Soundweb London BLU-100/160) while placing inputs closer to the source to reduce analog cable runs.

Typical Use Case:

  • Microphones or instruments are connected to the BLU-BIB on stage.
  • The BLU-BIB digitizes the audio.
  • The signals travel via Cat5e/Cat6 cable over BLU link to the main DSP.
  • From there, they can be processed, routed, and distributed to amplifiers or other devices.

Connectivity

  • Inputs: 8 analog (balanced, line-level, Euroblock).
  • Outputs: BLU link (primary + secondary for redundancy).
  • Network: Ethernet port for HiQnet control/firmware.
  • Indicators: Signal present and clip LEDs for each channel.
  • Power: IEC connector with auto-sensing supply.

Integration with Soundweb London

When used in combination with Soundweb London processors (e.g., BLU-100, BLU-160, BLU-806DA), the BLU-BIB provides a highly flexible system:

  • Inputs are automatically available on the BLU link bus.
  • Control and monitoring via HiQnet Audio Architect or HiQnet London Architect.
  • Devices can be mixed-and-matched: BLU-BIB for inputs, BLU-BOB2 (Break-Out Box) for outputs.

Signal Flow Diagram

Below is a simplified signal flow showing how the BLU-BIB integrates into a BLU link system:

Rack Mounting Options

The BLU-BIB's half-rack 1U design allows flexible mounting options.

  • Single mount: One BLU-BIB with half the tray filled, the other half left empty.
  • Dual mount: Combine a BLU-BIB with another half-rack unit, such as a BLU-BOB2 output expander, in a single 1U space.

Benefits in Real-World Applications

  • Scalable: Easily expand input capacity without buying another processor.
  • Reliable: Redundant BLU link connections ensure continuous operation.
  • Cost-effective: A simple way to add inputs where needed.
  • Flexible Placement: Install near the audio source to minimize noise and cabling.

Conclusion

The BSS BLU-BIB Input Expander is an essential tool for audio system designers and installers who need to expand input capabilities in a BLU link ecosystem.  With its compact size, plug-and-play operation, and high-quality conversion, it integrates seamlessly into professional sound systems while reducing complexity and cabling costs.

Whether used in a conference center, performance venue, or corporate environment, the BLU-BIB delivers reliable input expansion and ensures audio signals are handled with precision from the very beginning of the signal chain.
