Overview:
Selecting a portable PA system involves more than choosing the loudspeaker with the highest wattage or maximum SPL rating. The required system depends on the application, audience distance, venue conditions, program material, and the amount of low-frequency output required.
This guide explains how to use JBL Professional portable PA coverage charts to identify an appropriate starting point for live music, DJ playback, acoustic performances, presentations, and speech reinforcement.
Portable PA Features and Ideal Audience Distance
The table shows a clear progression from portable, small-room systems to high-output systems for larger audiences showing their key features, maximum sound pressure level (SPL), weight, and the approximate audience distance they can cover.
The Features are located on the left side of the table and on the right side is the Ideal Audience Distance.
Ideal Audience Distance at 0 meters, the listener is closest to the system and the available output is highest. As distance increases, the bar fades to represent the transition from high output to a clearly audible level. The end of the fade is not a hard cutoff or a guaranteed venue boundary.
Important Information:

Maximum SPL describes how much sound-pressure level a loudspeaker can produce under its specified measurement conditions. Maximum SPL alone does not indicate how evenly the loudspeaker covers a room or how intelligible the system will be at the back of the audience.
- Wattage should not be used by itself to predict coverage. Amplifier wattage, loudspeaker efficiency, DSP limiting, driver capability, and enclosure design all contribute to the final acoustic output.

NOTE:
The EON ONE Compact and EON ONE MK2 can operate from their internal rechargeable batteries or AC mains power.
The EON ONE MK2 has two maximum SPL ratings because the available acoustic output depends on the power source
Coverage Information:
Eligible systems marked with an asterisk can also be used in pairs. When correctly configured and positioned, two systems may increase the indicated audience distance by approximately 1.4x, but they do not double coverage. Actual coverage depends on system configuration, placement, room acoustics, background noise, listening level, frequency content, and available headroom.
Adding a Subwoofer:
A subwoofer extends low-frequency reproduction and reduces bass demands on the main loudspeakers. It is recommended for applications requiring strong low-frequency impact, such as DJ playback, electronic music, live bands, and dance events.
A subwoofer does not increase speech intelligibility or audience coverage. For presentations, spoken-word events, and some acoustic performances, it may not be necessary. With proper crossover or DSP configuration, a subwoofer can also provide additional headroom for the main loudspeakers, improving overall system performance.
