Gathering Syslog Message Using N-Able

Overview:

Syslog messages provide real time log output from encoders/decoders and are helpful in troubleshooting network, video, or communication issues.

Requires: N-Able software version 5.1.77 or higher.

Download N-Able control software


Enable Syslog Viewer in N-Able

1.    Open N-Able software.
2.    Go to Menu (top left) → Settings.
3.    Select the Network tab.
4.    Enable the following checkboxes:

  • Listen for Syslog Messages
  • Save each syslog to a file (Format is IP Name.log)

5.    Enter or confirm:

  • Syslog Port: 514 (or your preferred port)
  • Syslog Path: Choose a folder where logs will be saved.

6.    Click OK.

Enable Syslog Output on the Encoder/Decoder

1.    In N-Able, double click the encoder or decoder unit to open its settings page.

2.    Navigate to System → Logs.

  • Scroll to the bottom.
  • Enable (checkbox): Syslog Server Enable
     

3.    Enter:

  • Syslog Server: IP address of the server or computer's IP to save logs locally.
  • Syslog Port: must match N-Able (ex: 514)

4.    Click Save.

Viewing Syslog Messages in N-Able

1.    In N-Able (top menu) go to Troubleshoot and select Syslog Viewer

2.    In the Syslog Viewer:

  • Ensure Log Entries is checked.
  • Use Capture Filter to select All Units or a specific device.
  • Use Clear Logs to erase logs from Viewer.

3.    To access stored .log files:

  • Click the path button at the bottom of Syslog Viewer.
    (This opens the folder set as the Syslog Path.)

Disabling Syslog Output

1.    Open the encoder/decoder settings page (double click unit in N-Able).

2.    Navigate to System → Logs.

  • Scroll to the bottom and uncheck: Syslog Server Enable

3.    Click Save.
