Overview:
This article covers the VIRTUAL view and explains Allocation in AVX Architect.

Description:
Allocation determines how AVX Architect assigns processing objects to hardware devices within a design.
To demonstrate allocation, hardware devices must first be added. Add two DSP units and two expanders to the SYSTEM view.

Open the VIRTUAL view. The four devices added will now appear in the COMPONENT LIST on the left pane.

Below the COMPONENT LIST is the VIRTUAL LIBRARY, which includes a drop-down menu for the Default Host.

The Default Host is the hardware device to which processing objects are allocated by default when placed into the workspace from the VIRTUAL LIBRARY.
The Default Host can be changed, but only a 256p or 512p can be selected here.
Set the Default Host to DSP1 and add processing objects to the workspace.

These objects will be allocated to DSP1. The wire connecting them will appear solid, indicating that both objects exist on the same processor.

Confirm allocation by selecting an object and reviewing the Allocation section in the PROPERTIES window.

The processor allocation can be changed using the drop-down menu. Changing Allocation to DSP2 will update the project, and the wire connecting the objects will become dotted, indicating that the objects exist on different processors.

Privately routed Dante is used to transfer audio between processors. This Dante route is managed directly by AVX Architect and does not appear in and cannot be changed by Dante Controller.
Allocation can also be applied in bulk. Select multiple objects and use the same drop-down menu to assign them to a single processor simultaneously.

This concept also applies to expanders that support logic processing.
Drag an expander GPI from the COMPONENT LIST into the workspace. Objects from the COMPONENT LIST are allocated to their respective hardware and cannot be changed.

Using the Gain object, add a mute button to create a logic binary object.

If the logic object is connected to the expander GPI while the Default Host is DSP1, wires will appear dotted. Changing allocation to Expander 1 will make the wires solid.

As processing objects are added and allocated, the RESOURCE GRID updates to show CPU, DSP, and Dante usage percentages.
![]()
Add a Dante block to the design and assign channels. The RESOURCE GRID will display 1% usage because the block is assigned to DSP1.
![]()
Change allocation to the expander. Dante usage will increase to 25%.

Double-click the RESOURCE GRID for detailed resource information in the RESOURCE GRID tool.

Clicking any section provides deeper insights. Selecting the Dante section opens a window with advanced Dante information, including device connection status, channel usage, and flows.

If the device is offline, the window will indicate this status. A live device will display active data.

The RESOURCE GRID tool also includes additional features. Use the icon to the left of the device name to highlight or darken processing objects allocated to that device.

Selecting DSP2 will highlight objects allocated to DSP2.
Use the Select buttons to the right of the DSP name to bulk select audio, logic, or I/O objects for reassignment or deletion.

To select all objects in the workspace, press Control+A. Use the Deselect option in the RESOURCE GRID tool to remove selections for objects assigned to a specific hardware device.
