Signal Naming | AVX Architect

Video Manual Series

Written by Tony Smith

Updated at October 30th, 2026

This video explains how to use signal naming in AVX Architect to improve system design workflow and signal flow readability. You’ll learn how to rename signals, see how signal names propagate downstream in the design, and discover naming tips that make the process faster and more efficient.

Transcript
In this video, we’re going to continue expanding on tips to help your system design workflow and cover signal naming. This signal naming feature is unique to Harman software that allows you to visually track a signal flow by the name of that signal.
In this example, I’ve already got an OMNI DSP and Expander placed in our System view. I’m going to add a generic input source and expand it so that we can see the full name. This object will follow the standard naming paradigm. Since it’s the third object placed, its default name is D3, and we know that can be changed in the Properties window. Notice that by default, the signal name present at the output node is also the same as the object name. If we connect this object to the input of the expander, then the signal name will follow and also appear here on the expander’s input.
Let’s look at the Virtual View now and see how that same analog input is shown here with the same signal name, and that signal name flows through to each object in the circuit. I’m going to rename this analog input something more descriptive, like Mixer. The signal name at each object in the design can be renamed by right-clicking and selecting “Edit Signal Names”. In the Signal Naming popup, you can use a combination of custom text and/or the wild cards here to name the output. The “dollar sign” will use the incoming signal name from the corresponding input. The “pound” or “number” symbol will make the signal name use the object’s name from the properties window. The “tilde” symbol will change the signal name to that of the output connector, useful for objects with multiple outputs like a crossover with multiple bands or a mixer with direct or group outs. Let’s set this to be the object’s name using the number symbol and see how that flows through our system.
Let’s change up the naming for our Gain object, but first I’m going to rename the input object again. This time, to “mono”. This gain object has multiple outputs that go to the filters to create a crossover, so let’s name the outputs to reflect this. Right-click the object and select “edit signal names”. The dollar sign is the default signal name, pulling the signal name from the incoming signal. This is fine, because we might still want this information in the signal name, but let’s go ahead and add some text to the end. This first output is going to the high pass filter, so let’s add “Mid-high” to the signal name after the dollar sign. I’m also going to add “subs” to the second output that’s going to the low pass filter. Click “OK” and we can now see that the signal name has updated and continues to feed the new signal name to the objects downstream.
