How do I test my Notepad power supply?

When testing a power supply brick for the Notepad mixer, start with the power supply un-plugged from the outlet and disconnected from the Notepad mixer.

  1. Plug the power supply brick into the outlet.
  2. Is the small green LED on the power brick lit when plugged in?
    1. No: Power supply is bad
    2. Yes : Now connect the power supply to the mixer, is it still on?

If the LED on the brick goes off when plugged into mixer, the mixer has a bad internal power supply and will need service.

This is a basic test, there are other factors that could cause false results.

Are the Notepad series mixers compatible with macOS Ventura and M2 chipped Mac?

How to update the firmware on Notepad consoles?

Note:

Firmware update is only required if you have an older Notepad that contains firmware of an earlier version than V1.09. Notepads manufactured from mid-2018 already have V1.09 installed. Check the currently installed firmware version by connecting the Notepad to the computer, and running the Firmware Update Utility (Windows: from the Start Menu: Programs\Harman Pro\Soundcraft\Multi-channel USB Audio\Launch Notepad Firmware Update Utility; Mac: Applications\Notepad Firmware Update Utility). The Current Firmware version is shown in the upper part of the window.

  • If the Current Firmware version is lower than v1.09, update the firmware as follows:  In the Update Utility's window, verify that the Notepad mixer has been detected (text will say, "Device opened. Ready for firmware update from version 1.xx to 1.09").

  • Click the Start button in the bottom right of the Firmware Upgrade window. A progress bar will be displayed and show a notification when successfully complete (see screenshot below).
  • The firmware update should complete within 30 seconds.
  • If it doesn't start, or shows a fail message, power cycle the Notepad, close and re-open the Firmware Update window and try again.

  • After successful firmware update, the Notepad should be power-cycled to ensure it is detected by the computer’s USB interface before using for audio.

Note:

The ‘Current Firmware’ may not display the new version number until the console is power-cycled.

Do the Notepad mixers and the Ui12 and Ui16 have the same external power supply?

All Notepad mixers have the same external, 18V, 1.3A mid-lead power supply.  Although the Ui12 and Ui16 also has an external, 18V, 1.3A mid-lead power supply, it is not the same.  The Ui power supply has a power adapter with a threaded locking ring to prevent accidental removal.  On the Notepad mixers, you can fix the power cable with a cord restraint located on the back of the mixer to prevent accidental removal.

How Do I Create A Podcast Mix That Eliminates Looping Feedback From Return Source From Computer?

In doing a podcast where you also need to listen to far-side audio, you will need to setup what is called a "mix minus" on the mixer, so as not to create a loop form the return back into the send.

Scenario - you mix and send the mixer's L&R to the computer streaming or recording the podcast. It is a mix of the local microphones, but you also need to listen to the return from the computer to hear far side audio. When you bring up the return channel, you get a feedback loop, especially on the far side.

Solution - create a "mix minus" using an Aux send whereas you only have the local mics in that mix. You will listen to the complete mix in headphones from the Aux, hearing the local mics and far side audio, but the L&R send going to the computer will only send the local mics from the mixer, eliminating any feedback looping.

Here's how to do it - on the mixer, create your listening mix with mics and the return channel on the Aux bus, including the stereo computer return channel. In the L&R mix, only bring up the local mics. The far side will hear just the local mics from the mixer, but you will hear the local mics and the far side audio in the headphone mix, by listening to that Aux mix.

Note: The Aux Bus sum is sent to the Aux Master output level control. This sum is made up of the aux send pre-fade contributions from each channel. That is, the sends are taken before the input channel fader and are not affected by the input channel fader levels. So your headphone mix is totally independent of the L&R mix going to your computer. You can listen back and forth by selecting either L&R or Aux on the headphone mix select button.
