Video Manual Series

Written by Tony Smith

This video provides a walkthrough of using the Automix in the Ui24R, added in the version 2 firmware update.  Usually a feature included with high-end broadcasting mixers, Automix will help blend a collection of microphones when used for a group of speakers or presenters.

UPDATE YOUR Ui24R!

Transcript

Hello, and welcome back to the Soundcraft Ui video manual series. Today, we’re going to talk about the Automix feature on the Ui24R. Introduced in the 2.0 update, Automix is useful for having multiple live microphones in a speech application, like a group of panelists. Normally, you would encounter a lot of room noise, feedback, and bleed, but Automix will adjust the levels of user defined channels automatically based on "weights". Make sure your mixer is updated to the latest firmware version to use the Automix feature. Let’s get started.
In this example, let’s say we have 3 microphones used between 2 panelists and a moderator. Channel 1 is our moderator, and channels 2 and 3 are our panelists. Automix should be set up after you’ve done an initial soundcheck and set gains properly for each microphone. Head into the meter page by selecting the meters button in the top left of the screen, then navigate to the Automix tab. The Ui24’s Automix comes with two groups, with each group supporting up to 8 channels. Select the group A or B here in the top left to determine which group to modify. Next, select the channels you want to have in the automix group. In this example, we’re only using our first three channels.
You should now see the channels have their own faders here in the bottom. Each fader represents the “weighting” or priority of the channels, and has a range of +/- 12dB. In our example, channel one is the main presenter, so I want this weighting to be more than my other two panelists. Now, when I speak into the main microphone, we can see the amount of reduction being applied to the other two microphones shown in this purple reduction meter. Notice now how the reduction is different when speaking into the secondary microphones because of how the weighting is set. The speed of the reduction can be changed by this Global Response Time fader. You can also quickly clear your Automix groups by hitting the reset button at the top of the channel section.
