Windows Defender Flags TPDesign 5 as a Virus

Rating

Question:

Why does Windows Defender flag TPDesign 5 as having a virus?

Answer:

Microsoft Windows Defender has occasionally falsely flagged Touch Panel Design 5 as being a virus or being infected with a virus.  If you have encountered this, please follow the procedure below to report this false positive to Microsoft.

To submit false positives to MS, complete the submission process for false positives using the following link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/filesubmission/

For the fileless submission directions use the following link: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/security/defender-endpoint/defender-endpoint-false-positives-negatives?view=o365-worldwide#submit-a-fileless-detection-for-analysis

Updated versions of virus definitions should correctly identify TPDesign as being safe.  You will need to clear Windows Defender's cache and download new virus definitions.  The following steps should correct the issue:

  1. Open command prompt as administrator and change directory to c:\Program Files\Windows Defender
  2. Type in and run: MpCmdRun.exe -removedefinitions -dynamicsignatures
  3. Type in and run: MpCmdRun.exe -SignatureUpdate
